What does this experience mean for me as an actor? It’s something that defies verbalization and transcends any form or concept. It’s something that happens to you personally, something you wish could last forever. Truly, it’s hard to put into words something that is pure love, says actor Veselinov.
“1000 Years a Witness of Light” is the title of the new documentary dedicated to the “St. John Bigorski” Monastery. The film, premiering today on MTV and available on the official YouTube channel of the Bigorski Monastery, is directed by Ilija Iko Karov, with actor Blagoj Veselinov as the protagonist. The monastery, according to records, was founded by the monk John in 1020 and was destroyed during the Ottoman rule in the 16th century, leaving only a small church from the large complex. The monastery was restored in 1743, and its name derives from the use of bigor stone for its construction. The church, dedicated to John the Baptist, is notable for its impressive interior, dominated by a unique carving of religious motifs and stories, crafted in whole pieces of walnut wood.
In this interview, we discuss the experience and impressions from filming this movie with Veselinov.
The Bigorski Monastery is widely known for its size and authenticity, not just as a structure but also for its genuine spirituality. What did this cinematic experience, in which you are the main protagonist, mean to you?
Why is this experience something completely different from what you have done throughout your long acting career?
– I had visited the Bigorski Monastery before. I can say that just by silently observing, I felt I had seen and known it, even though I hadn’t attended a liturgy or prayer. It’s something that defies verbalization and transcends any form or concept, something that happens to you personally, something you wish could last forever. I don’t know how I will be understood, but truly, it’s hard to put into words something that is pure love.
Whose idea was it to create “1000 Years a Witness of Light”?
– I got involved in this process through the film’s director, Ilija Iko Karov. When he approached me, I first said: “Okay, I agree,” and then I asked what exactly I would need to do. The idea was born in the monastery as one of many generated by Bishop Partenij and the sisters and brothers of the Bigorski Monastery on the occasion of its 1000th anniversary. I am thrilled and honored to have been part of making this documentary.
Was it difficult to capture everything that you as an actor had envisioned, as well as the director of the film?
Bigorski is a spiritual temple with a space beyond time. There, all mistakes are erased through continuous prayer. Bigorski can offer more than expected because it is founded on love. Until now, we were accustomed only to a reportage approach, but this film opens a perspective of originality, authenticity, immediacy, and experience, and I believe that is what viewers will recognize.
